On June 17th, Telangana Government issued a GO which direct all the vehicle owners to change their number plates from AP to TS through a process of re-registration. Rammohan Chowdary, a resident of Hyderabad approached High Court and the court considered his plea.
Yesterday, on Monday, the division bench of the Hyderabad High Court granted 24 hours to the Telangana state government to explain under which law it has asked the vehicle owners to go for a re-registration of their vehicles and add TS to their number plates in place of AP. The division bench told the transport counsel of the state to come with a reply to them by Tuesday.
During the hearing of this case, the bench sought to know as to how the government derived its power for issuing the re-registration GO. The bench questioned, “If you have the power, you can do it. But first show from where you are deriving your power. Which law empowered you to do so?”. While replying, transport department counsel said the GO is only a preliminary notification and that nothing has been finalized yet by the state and sought some time to reply. The bench posted the matter to Tuesday for further hearing and directed the transport counsel to come with a clear reply.
